Just like one the of the guy said- closed off upstair stop the flow and vipe of the Black Party- I hope this is a lesson learned for the promoter- Without dark rooms up stair and sexually charged vibe- Black party is not the same- I know most of my freinds are not attending next year after the disappointing 2 years in a row.

Black Party 2011: This was my first Black Party, and I had thought it was going to be kinkier than what I saw. Now I only stayed until 6:00 am, and maybe things changed after I left, but it wasn't much different than a standard circuit party. Yes, I saw the sucking and a bit of fucking up stairs... but you see a bit of that at any party. Because the Recon fetish site promoted this party, I thought that there was going to be a bigger kink element to it. Lots of hot guys, which was good to see, although again, not sure that their interest in leather ran very deep (let alone whether they had any interest in kink). As a dance party it was probably okay, but bigger is not always better, and next time I'll have 10 or 12 guys for a s*x party in my hotel room instead.

Black Party2010 was seriously disappointing. Thumping music, $80 cover charge and none of the kinky wild s*x that existed in years past. It was like paying $80 to go to a big club in NY, DC or LA. IT was seriously nothing more than a night out at a big club with thousands of people on meth.

Black Party in 2010 was really disappointing. They closed off the upstairs into a VIP area, really damaging the flow of the party. Plus there were no real dark rooms. The entertainment was just strange. And, as usual, the music was just bad. I used to look forward to the Black Party all year, but this past year was just lousy. It could not compare with previous years or with Folsom Fair in San Francisco, or other Leather Circuit parties in Europe, etc. I hope this year they bring it back to how it used to be or people are going to stop going. Word is already out after last year's lousy party. I had friends in Europe saying they weren't coming this year because they heard last year's was so bad. Saint at Large had better set it right because one more year like 2010 may doom the party's reputation permanently and people will not waste the time and money to travel to New York for a party with a lousy reputation.

It’s truly hard to believe that after having lived in NYC for 5 years and having produced events in San Francisco I have never attended The Black Party in New York City; until now!

The Roseland Ballroom is easily 5 times bigger then any other venue we have in San Francisco. Having barely entered the venue, iconic Black Party Producer, Stephen Pevner, greeted us with a wide friendly grin and welcomed us into his creation. With an odd assortment of wooden chairs and lamps stacked haphazardly on the left and on the right, I seriously wondered if we walked into the right place. It felt much like a stuffy art gallery on the Upper West Side and not a club a mere 2 blocks from Studio 54.

As I walked further into the club, I felt the heat and the humidity of thousands of sweaty bodies. The space was packed with frolicking hotness on the massive dance floor. Getting to coat check was effortless in both arrival and departure. But I found myself peeking around each corner waiting to be “shocked and awed.” I admit that given all the crazy elements I’ve heard regarding Black Parties of the past I wandered the venue with a certain amount of trepidation. “Strange sex acts” on stage was the norm and I was mentally bracing my Mennonite self for a visual exorcism. But my fear was for naught and I’m honestly a little disappointed. I really wanted to see something hideously artistic and sexually charged!

My disappointment quickly evaporated into the fog and mist swirling over the dance floor. DJ Paulo was pulling out all the stops compelling me into a dancing frenzy. His ferocious and ambitious melding of virtually every genre of music into seamless house trance had me grinning like a damn fool until sunrise. Add this to Guy Smith’s mastery of the blood red lighting effects of the lasers and “ring of fire” surrounding the cherry red and silver mirrored 10 foot wide disco ball and one could swear that God was there in that room.

Despite the sold out crowd the venue felt roomy and the Black Party was rumored to have fewer attendees than previous years. However, I certainly appreciate a party that has enough room to dance then bob; enough room to get to the bathroom or bar quickly; enough room, enough heat, plenty of sex and sweat to proclaim that Rites XXXI is just my first dip into my newly formed annual tradition. Long Live the Black Party!

Weren't circuit parties over like 5 years ago? 40 year old guys on crystal meth aren't cute. Super lame.
