Annual outdoor NYC Pride party at the Pier 54 on the Sunday of the big Pride March.
The Dance on the Pier was born out of a time when the gay community could not dance, openly and proudly with other members of the LGBT community. It is a protest set to music, a celebration set to the western skyline and a reminder of how far we've come these last 2 decades. 100% of the proceeds from Dance on the Pier benefit New York City's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Week Events and community organizations.
Every edition has a special guest star, with the likes of Janet or Mariah. The party is closed with huge fireworks.
The "Pier Dance" is a must during NYC Pride each June. The crowd usually arives around 6 p.m. and stays until after 10 p.m. when the fireworks end the evening. Then boys are off to Alegria or wherever the night (and that someone they met on the pier) takes them.
Don't go expecting to have your music tastes elevated. The $50 will get you pretty commercial techno, house, progressive and maybe a little disco. Toward the end of the evening, there is usually a guest appearance. In years past Janet Jackson, the Pussy Cat dolls and other divas of the moment have appeared.
The crowd is hot men, hardly any women [If they were there, I didn't see them] and the occasional guy who has had too much to drink or other substances. It can be incredibly crowded and as diverse as a crowd of thousands of gay men in the largest city in the US can get. Definately a must for the gents visiting during Pride!
