I want to know more about this sauna
It is important to know that Haulover Beach is NOT in South Beach. It's not in Miami or Miami Beach actually. It is between Hollywood and Bal Harbor (which is a fashionable and expensive suburb or sorts of Miami Beach about 20 mins if not a lot of traffic). And it is a nude (clothing optional) beach where the boys are at one end of it. To get to the gay part, you will pass the straight nude part and sometimes it's not pretty.
But once at the gay part you will see both women and men (but mostly men and the occasional topless lady) basking in the sun and dangling in the wind.
The beach is not particularly wide, but it is a nice space and worth visiting if you really want to walk around in full glory. Otherwise the "gay beach" in South Beach (at about 13th Steet and Ocean Drive) is a good bet.
Of course photos are "discouraged" and discretion is important, but let's be real, people know what you are there for. Parking is about $5 (depending on time of day) and you have to walk through bushes on a path and through a tunnel (that goes under the highway) to the nude part. Oddly, I am not aware of a real nude beach actually IN Miami Beach, but if you don't mind the inconvenience of getting there, it can be a swinging good time.
The Winter Party, held in late February or first weekend in March, is "the other" big party in Miami, after the White Party which is usually Thanksgiving Weekend in late November. Imagine, thousands of boys in speedos on the beach -- Atlantic Ocean on one side, the late Gianni Versace mansion on the other, blue sky above, and soft sand below. Muy Caliente!
The ticket prices can set you back a bit. I believe it was about $80 last year, which is a bit ridiculous, but the boys pay it, so it can't be that bad. The music is the same circuit fluff you get any where else (screaming divas, techno, tribal beats), but the weekend is usually filled with DJs from all over the world there for that weekend with its many parties around Miami Beach and Miami proper. Some DJs are also in the area for the annual Winter Music Conference typically not long after the Winter Party.
Boys from Fort Lauderdale (40 minutes away) and Tampa (3+ hours away) come down for the festivities, as well as boys from everywhere else, particularly from Washington, NY, Boston, Chicago or Atlanta.
The Winter Party itself is THE party on the beach but there are several venues that offer a lot of options for the entire weekend, particularly the parties at Space or Twilo in downtown Miami (usually about $40-$80 door charge). If you are staying in Miami Beach, you will not need a car [in fact, it is more trouble than you need] but if you are staying in Miami or Fort Lauderdale, you should consider renting, carpooling or prepare for a very expensive taxi ride.
Word of caution: this is the "see and be seen" scene, so make sure you have worked off those holiday pounds or the boys can be unkind.
Halo Miami, like it's older sister in Washington, DC, is a trendy minimal space that is best described as "cool." The decor is crisp and clean and delivers the feel of a hip New York loft filled with fabulously gorgeous people and impossibly expensive Italian import decor. Of course it's not, but it LOOKS like it could be. The minimalist white decor punctuated by bursts of ambient color always seem to bathe your pals in a flattering light -- absolutely critical once those mojitos finally kick in!
Very nice "chill" music is always playing at just enough volume to hear and enjoy but not so loud you have to shout -- very good for a lounge, but an aspect that many other lounges forget. The various mojitos offered make for a fun night out (or better yet a "pre-out") to mingle and sample.
Nice space, cool decor, good music, great location. Definately worth visiting.
