In 2008, the march/parade was on Saturday, 1 November, as it is usually the first Saturday in November. Unfortunately, many gay guides could not pin down the exact dates of events, so many participants did not know exactly when other related events were occuring.

BA does not have a weeklong series of events, so if you do not participate in the march/parade, you may not have known BA Pride happened at all.

It starts with guests laying on chairs getting sun on the upper levels of the patio near the rear area and surrounding the pool itself. There are four cool shower cubes that allow you wash off in a free-standing shower. If you are shy about EVERYONE seeing you shower, it can be interesting.

As the crowd comes in and sun goes below the surrounding rooftops, the party decends to the lower level (near the very small bar) and is quite a good time with good music from guest DJs.

The cocktails are a bit pricey, and not always mixed well -- I recommend keeping it simple for the bartenders. But, as the night continues, that matter less.

It is certainly a well attended event and should not be missed. The hotel guests sun from 2 p.m. and the outside guests arrive after 4 p.m. There is room for dancing and the inner lounge area for relaxing. The party ends promptly at 10 p.m.

The Hotel is in a tumble down area of SanTelmo and is facing a crumbling building across the street and is surrounded by much taller apparently vacant or abandoned old buildings. It is relatively new and is still working out some of the bugs. My stay there was pleasant but not all it is billed as (e.g., a 4 or 5 star hotel). It is not a 5 star hotel. It is a nice, highly desiged, boutique hotel that caters to gay men. There is a difference.

First, the check-in reception is far too small to be able to handle the typical rush of check-in and check-out. The single staff member seemed overwhelmed so that it took much longer than necessary to get basic information or services. The reception area is too small to handle more staff and really should be moved.

The rooms are quite expensive for the area when compared to other major cities. Anticipate $AR900 per night (about $290USD) for a room that sleeps one or two in a king sized bed or two twin sized beds pressed together. The drinks cost about $AR20 (about $8USD).

During the pool party, the staff seemed to run out of towels, which seems like a pretty basic matter to avoid. It took 20 minutes to get two towels... for a POOL PARTY! It was easier to get them myself rather than wait. They did not have enough ingredients to make the cocktails that were advertised on the list of available drinks. The morning breakfast was good. A continental breafast with meats, breads, eggs, juices and pastries. Well done.

The design of the hotel values style over functionality. The shower cube in the middle of the room is a nice (and somewhat unique) design feature, but on a long shower it will steam up the room, which is not large to begin with. The sinks don't drain properly and while they look nice, they are not practical for most uses beyond merely washing your hands. The flatscreen televisions on the wall, the leather lined closets and mirror wall are nice touches. No pictures on the white walls, no carpet or rugs and concrete floors is one person's "minimal" and another person's prison cell.

The roofdeck pool was interesting, but it is about a meter deep, so no diving. It is also about 95 degrees so it is essentially a vast hottub. The nearby hot and steam saunas and actual four-person hottub are nice. Free and available water is a nice touch, similar to Axel in Barcelona, Spain.

The pool party is fun. The Axel is fine for a single traveler or a couple who are seeking a decidedly gay experience in BA. It is not, however, the best hotel for an experienced traveler who wants the service and amenities to match or surpass the price. At Axel, you pay for the design and likelihood of cute guys working there. I saw only one woman (other than the cleaning lady) for my entire stay.

If you want luxury beyond a boutique hotel still trying to get it right, look elsewhere. If you want to be close to the better restaurants, shopping and clubs, Axel is not the best choice. If you are looking for a gay hotel that understands its clientele and makes a strong attempt to please them, Axel may be your place. However, considering the price, you may have to overlook quite a bit to be happy. Let's hold out hope for Axel Hotel in Berlin.

It is a large darkroom, pure and simple. There is music playing, a small video "room" in the front, but essentially, it is a darkroom with a separation panels and small hideaways to one side; a few dozen tiny video booths playing adult to the other side. It has a tiny bathroom at the rear.

The boys of BA are a strange lot. They will be very conservative at the bars at night, but once at Zoom and places like it, they are VERY affectionate and ready for fun. Globalaza likes balance, so it may be better to flirt a bit out at Bahrein, Glam, Amerika, Search, etc, then have your fun at Zoom later.

Like any decent darkroom, they sell condoms and lube. Pay the $AR6 (about $2 USD), you will need it.

I had a great time. The crowd is truly mixed with girls and boys, gays and straights, older and young (but mostly young) mixing together without issues or incident. There was a fashion show while I was there on Friday with hot local boys in skimpy bikinis and shorts. Yum!

There are two levels really with a balony terrace level that played really good tech-house and the main floor that played a mixture of American pop music, Latin, hip-hop, house and a everything else. Many of the boys and girls knew the Latin songs but everyone seemed to be having a great time. Perhaps too great a time for some because there was a seating area near the center bar that looked like the place where you can recover from whatever you were doing.

There is a dark room that has guards with flashlights that in theory patrol the area to ensure nothing nasty is happening. In reality, there are there for show because the later it got, the more was going on. Mostly horny boys getting freaky with each other while the guards looked the other way.

The place is huge and similar to many megaclubs throughout the US and the world. Lots of lights, thumping music, and club decor. It is definately a fun night in BA.

Upon arrival, you will get a credit card-type thing that costs $AR15 (about $5USD) where you take that to the bar-cashier, who will give you a different color card if you order a drink, then she'll take your order and give you a receipt so you can then give the receipt with the cost of your drink written on it to the actual bartender who will make your drink, ring a bell, and give it to the barback who will then give it to you. Very strange and overly complex.

The bar itself is your typical neighborhood bar, except that it has a huge video screen at the rear and small tables for guests to watch what looked like America's Funniest Home Videos! Surrounding the bar are more small tables and high stools with red LED numbered lights indicating what table you have, and a server who frequently takes orders.

I never quite figured out why it is so unusual but it appeared to have plenty of boys who thought it was just fine. It's a good pre-out place to meet a friend then hit the town. It's on a busy street and may be a bit hard to find. Decent cocktails but don't expect great music, decor, or entertainment.
